![]() Silver Award Richmond Hill school has now achieved the silver award status from Eco-schools. This has been achieved through lots of hard work and dedication to the cause of sustainability in our school. The children have been involved in lots of sustainable activities such as litter picking, recycling and composting. As a school we have enrolled to ‘the Pod’ which is linked to eco-school and provides lots of activities to support us to become a sustainable school. Some activities that Richmond Hill’s staff and pupils have supported from the pod are: ‘Switch off fortnight’, ‘National Nest box week’ and ‘Bug Month’. Some upcoming events are: ‘Compost Awareness Week’, ‘Green Britain Day’ and ‘Love Parks Week’. If you would like to join in with some of these activities with your child at home or to find out more information on eco-schools and sustainability you can register at www.jointhepod.org We now have an action plan that we are working towards to gain the ‘Green Flag’ award. More information can be found in our newsletters or on our notice board located inside the school hall. Bronze Award The government would like every school to be a sustainable school by 2020. At Richmond hill we have started on the journey and are proud to announce that we achieved the Eco-Schools Bronze Award. In order for us to achieve the award we set ourselves targets covering energy, waste, healthy living and biodiversity. We been particularly good at recycling waste materials such as plastic, card and paper. We also composting all our fruit leftovers. Each class has a special compost bin for fruit and at the end of each week the bin is emptied into the large compost bin. Compost from this can be used to help other plants and vegetables grow. The school council has been involved by helping to select healthy options for our dinner. We are also putting up bird boxes around the school to attract a variety of birds to nest. Having achieved the bronze award we are now starting working towards the silver award and hope we will achieve this some time in 2010.
